The annual NBRC dinner and prizegiving was held on Friday 13th January, at The Wheatsheaf, Bow Brickhill. It was a pretty convivial evening, and was considerably enlivened by the Club Members' Awards, presented by Neill Boddinton in a greatly amusing, if sometimes ribald style!

Note that in some cases, trophies couldn't be awarded as members hadn't competed in the relevant events, or we don't have eligible members (e.g. Juniors). This year's awards were as follows:

The Club Members awards were voted for by the members at the dinner, from a prepared shortlist of three candidates for each of the five prizes:

Ride of the Year

This could be a race winning ride, a gutsy club ride or a truly owe inspiring effort in a sportive or endurance event. Either way, this person has delivered something special on a bike.

Shortlist:

Luke Daniels who completed the 1 Day Newcastle to London on limited training.

James Richardson for setting the new club 10mile TT record.

Steve Abraham for riding and riding and riding and riding and rid……

And the winner was... Steve Abraham

Pédaleur De Charme

This person rides with style and panache, the bike moves under them with grace and flair. They also deliver sartorial elegance; matching clothing to bike to accessories. Everything fits well and complements each other no matter the weather.

Shortlist:

Rob Saunders for style and elegance on a TT bike.

Tim Bailey for somehow looking as if the bike has been surgically stitched on to his body…..as he works in the art world this is no doubt true and the next winner of the Turner Prize.

Neill Boddington. I mean come one, who else would have saddle bag trim matching helmet, matching wheel trim, matching socks, matching bike decals!!!

And the winner was... Robert Saunders

Compo Award

Like everyone's favourite tramp from Last of the Summer Wine (look it up on wiki those of you under 40), this person sets off on a ride already looking like they have ridden for 100miles over Belgium cobbles in January. Kit is soiled with oil, bike is dirty and accessories are all miss-matched. To make matters worse, they quite frankly handle a bike as if they are still drunk from the night before.

Shortlist:

Neill Boddington. “I am gobsmacked that a man who wore silver overshoes and has white wheels, can consider himself a contender for any style based award!”

Iftkhar Hussain for his stubborn and admirable approach to never cleaning his bike…in fact, when it rains it actually ends up cleaner!

Mark Sibbald. Neon yellow helmet, oil stand socks and greasy bar tape on that beautiful canyon... need we say anymore?

And the winner was... Mark Sibbald

Mechanical Balls Up Award

Who has managed to put their pedals on backwards or bought a Campag cassette for a Shimano wheel? Who do we know that has parts falling off leaving the road to look like a cycling breakers yard. This person displays some level of mechanical incompetence that helps to keep our local bike shops in business.

Shortlist:

Tim Bailey for hardly ever finishing an XC race without something falling off.

Tim Bailey for his amusing tales of yet another mechanical mishap.

Tim Bailey for breaking a bike by just looking at it.

And the winner was (somewhat unsurprisingly, given the shortlist!)... Tim Bailey

Members Award

This is awarded to the person who we feel has embodied all that is good about NBRC. They have stood up for our club values, gone the extra mile or just give something back that makes us smile. It could be one act of kindness or perseverance, or a season long dedication to the bike. This is not necessarily the greatest of cyclist or the one who has the biggest trophy cabinet, but instead the person who has made us all stop and talk in admiration.

Shortlist:

Stephanie Cousins for her longstanding service and loyalty to the club. Always happy to help volunteer to marshal at races. Supports all the club events, trips and rides. Keeps us all on our toes even though she does faff a lot!

Russell Page for his welcoming and friendly attitude to members, regular attendance at club rides and his encyclopaedic knowledge and willingness to help with any mechanical issues.

Nathan Gallavan who is frequently at club rides, has got involved with the club in many areas and for trying his hand at XC. Plus anyone who has taken on the role of Tim’s XC bitch needs an award.

And the winner was... Steph Cousins
