MK Festival of Cycling 7th & 8th June 2014

Closed road City Centre racing and time trialling comes to Central Milton Keynes as part of this year’s MK Festival of Cycling organised by Team Milton Keynes in conjunction with Milton Keynes Council, British Cycling and the CTT.

Saturday the 7th is dedicated to the BC National Youth Series event 10a.m. to 4p.m. – more info at and

Sunday the 8th is time trialling day with a 10 mile open time trial 8a.m. to 11a.m. priority to 4-up teams but solo rider entries available – entries invited now at or online at Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information

It isn’t often time triallers have the opportunity of a challenging closed road city centre event to test themselves on bike handling skills and teamwork will be at a premium – early entry is strongly recommended.

This event is part of a new for 2014 4-round Team Trial Series organised by BMCC and TMK. The events in the Series are:

3rd June – 9 up – Weston on the Green
8th June – 4 up – Central Milton Keynes
20th June – 9 up – Silverstone
1st July – 4 up – Weston on the Green

Trophies for top 3 teams and subject to entries for Vets and ladies teams.
All four events must be contested but individual team members can change for each event.
Automatic entry for those teams entering the first event at Weston on 3rd June!

Dick Selley has emailed to say that NBRC are down to marshall at the MKCA Summer Series event at the MK Bowl on Thursday 24th April. Helpers are needed from 7pm. Dick says 6 helpers are needed - contact him directly if you're able to help.

As noted on the 2014 Club events main page, we are compiling four time trial leagues this season:

1. An open league, with points awarded by placing in the rider's best seven counting events.
2. An NBRC league, with points awarded as for #1, but only NBRC members are included. Note that NBRC riders receive points according to their overall placings in the event.
3. A veterans league. Points awarded according to placings on vets standard (best seven counting events)
4. NBRC Handicap League - Bryan has compiled handicaps based on the past three seasons, points are awarded according to placings on handicap (best seven counting events).

I haven't posted current league tables yet, since we've had only four counting events and as a consequence I am leading three of the four leagues (I'm the only rider to have ridden them all). Which would be embarrassing.  But rest assured, this season we are compiling league tables!

February Newsletter

There was a good gathering at a warmer Harley Hall for the prizegiving in January.   Windows have been repaired and extra heaters were borrowed and activated for the occasion.

It was great to see members old and new including Duncan (Chalky) White who was a founder member and present in December 1951 at the inaugural meeting at the Wheatsheaf Pub in Bow Brickhill.   His name appears on many of our trophies and his ‘50’ time was faster than Richard’s this year!   Did you have to say that?   Sorry Rich.

Also present were Goz Goodman and Tony Ibell who joined the club in 1952 as juniors. Ruth Bromfield and Eileen Gingell also attended, they both donated cups  years ago and were asked to present them again this year.   Derek Taylor and Rina Brown came over from Bedford, Derek is the author of the club history “NBRC the first 50 years”

Dick Selley related the growth of the club over the years and the ever increasing collection of trophies.   Tony Farmborough’s shiny Holdsworth and Dick’s specially cleaned Trek acted as Christmas decorations, hanging from the rafters.

The first trophy to be presented was the ‘Sewell Cup’ for the Club Championship ‘25’ originally won by Dick Waldron, who sent his apologies, with a 1.5.53 in 1954.   This year Tony Parks was the winner with 56.54.

With the reduced interest in the longer distances, the BAR and the 100 mile trophies were not presented and Richard Miller was the recipient of the ‘50 cup’. Regretably he was unable to attend.

In the past few seasons Rob Saunders and Tony Parks have dominated the prize giving but this year the newer members came through strongly with Anthony Batt taking the lion’s share of the awards.

Paul McEntee won the ‘Veteran’s Road Race Trophy’. Graham Line won the ‘’Veterans Time Trial League’, the ‘Brush Cup’ and the ‘Eileen Gingell Shield’.   Bryan Scarborough, long serving previous Chairman, was presented with the ‘President’s Plate’.

The ‘Hillclimb Cup’ went to Darren Haydon and Luke Daniels was awarded the ‘Newcomers Cup’.

Medals went to the time trial top three, seniors and veterans, Anthony, Graham and Rob with Alan Lawson sliding onto the podium in third place.   Jennie Selley won the ‘Ladies Cup’.

The club decided to re-cycle!!!!!! a trophy this year for Steve Abraham, our long distance expert had only got medals in previous years, but his club record of 449.44 miles in 24 hours was seen as deserving of a proper trophy so the ‘Bieres Pelforth Cup’, a pot won in France many years ago by Goz and his Dad for a gentleman’s race was changed to the ‘24 hour Cup’.   Well done Steve, next time try to beat 450 miles!!!!

Other news......last week the club run went to Waddesdon and found that the cafe in the garden Centre is closing at the end of Feb.....DISASTER.....also the President rode over to Buckingham to see ex member Ray James at Solstice Cycles. I also rode part of the way back with Trevor East.

Club Kit......Darren reports that he is continuing to chase our new suppliers and expects the redesigned kit before the season commences. The Chairman is anticipating a huge influx of new members to be the result of this development.

Next Club Meeting will be Monday 10th February 7.30pm for 8pm meeting, at Harley Hall.

With only a month before the club time trials begin (see the calendar here), the three members who compiled the results of the 2013 NBRC Time Trial League have discussed how to work the League results in the 2014 season, and have come up with some proposals which we'd be happy to discuss with members. In particular, we were concerned at the representation of riders in the counting events, particularly since one or two of the counting events were cancelled or postponed. Please do come along and have your say. If you have an opinion, but can't make it on Monday, please feel free to email.

Time Trial League Proposals

Points - We propose to keep the points values as established in previous years, and as used in Gilbert’s spreadsheets - that is 150 points for first place, 140 points for second and so forth. 

Number of Counting Events - We propose that all club events (other than the New Year’s Day ’10’, the medium gear event and any 2-up events) as counting events. 

How Many Completed Events Count to a Rider’s Points Total? - We propose a rider's best seven rides, measured by their overall placing in each event.

Race results - We propose that the overall placing of a rider in an event is used to determine the points received. Therefore the fastest NBRC rider would not get 150 points for a third place in the event.

What Happens in the Event of a Points Tie? - Best aggregate time for the best ride in one each of the Astwood, Stony and Stoke Hammond courses. 

How Many Divisions? - In the old days, we used to have three divisions. In 2013, we didn’t have enough regular riders to justify more than one division. We propose a single division for 2014, and to revisit this for the 2015 season.

Awards - As for end of season awards, our club shields together with commemorative medals would only be awarded to NBRC first claim members. First, second and third place guest riders might be awarded engraved Gold, Silver & Bronze medals only.
