Central Cyclocross, Round 7

A report on the 7th Central Cyclocross League round (8th November 2015), from Dave Goodhew:

Icknield CXL7

Vets 40+

276 riders from under 10 to over 50 age groups completed another fabulous local race. Despite the weather earlier on in the week it was another race in short sleeves with plenty of sweat. Ground conditions were well drained with a short section of boggy, but overall fast and fun. I was riding a cross bike this week and Tim had new mud tyres!

Start was poor for me as I was faffing to clip in second pedal. Last week’s Kingston wheelers rider was on my wheel but was gone after a rounded a fast right hand turn on the inside and attacked the first hurdles as fast possible. I had a group of a few riders to hide behind but they were stretching me on the straights and bunching up on the turns. Eventually I got caught in no man’s land and got knocked back by the wind on the more open sections. Did not get lapped this time and Strava files were a solid effort at threshold or above.

Despite sticking in the red and staying there I came in at 33rd which was a bit lower than I wanted. Tim was having a bad day and came in 19th. We knew Tim wasn’t feeling well but it was a difficult course to pass on and did not have the hills where I normally see Tim’s opponents going backwards.

The race was won by Greg Simcock of Corley Cycles with the dependable CC Luton riders, Sean Dines and Mike Jackson on 2nd and 3rd.

In the seniors race, former NBRC rider Leigh Smith got 7th in only his second season, this is a very fine result.

I really enjoyed this one; perhaps I should ride my bike more than once a week and do some training.

Next week’s race will be  Kettering CC race in Desborough NN14 2JJ

I can loan an MTB in Large (you will need to be 5 10 ish) and will need spd shoes for anyone from the club wanting to try. MTB or cross bike makes little odds unless thick mud.
